The Senet is a board game from ancient Egypt and predynastic: it is the first known version of backgammon, checkers or chess.
The oldest hieroglyph representing a Senet game dates back to around 3500 BC. J.C. In Egyptian, the full name of the game means “The passing game”.
The game board then becomes a metaphor for the afterlife, with pieces moving from one side of the board to the other, as a soul crosses the different layers of hell after death. The goal of the game is to reach the final space and leave the plateau: just as reaching Horus and leaving the world of darkness was the goal of the Egyptians after their death.
